It was a night to remember for thousands of Led Zeppelin fans for all the right reasons but sadly for ageing model Naomi Campbell an over-zealous fan ruined it when he tried to rip her VIP pass from her neck – almost choking her in the process.
The 37-year-old was left shaken when the man grabbed the pass, pulling her hair and yanking her head back before a female assistant stepped in to help.
The incident happened around 3am after the reunion gig of Led Zeppelin at the O2 Arena.
Campbell was walking from backstage to the afterparty in the Indigo Bar when the fan pounced.
He made a grab for her VIP pass, which was attached to a ribbon around her neck. The ribbon tightened, choking her and pulling her head backwards, before the fan ripped it free and disappeared into the crowd.
Photographer Greg Brennan said: “People were doing anything to get their hands on one of those tickets. People were fighting all over the place. One man tried to slip Naomi’s pass off her neck without her realising while she was in between two of the parties.
“But it got caught in her hair, so he had to give it a good tug. Two security guards did appear but the guy had already got the pass and disappeared in the crowd. Naomi was furious and was swearing her head off.”
But a spokeswoman for Naomi tried to play down the incident, claiming Naomi had voluntarily given the pass to a souvenir hunter.
She said: “A fan came and asked Naomi for her pass at the end of the night, and the pass got caught in her hair as she was taking it off.”
But Mr Brennan tells us: “That’s not how it happened at all. She didn’t give the pass voluntarily. I saw the guy sneaking up behind her, and grabbing the pass.”
The incident topped off a dismal night for Naomi. She later lost her BlackBerry at the Indigo Bar party.
A spokesman for the O2 Arena said: “Our security is excellent, and we didn’t receive any complaints about the incident. Naomi Campbell did report that she had lost her phone, but she couldn’t even remember whether she brought it with her or not.”
According to one version of events, her bag, containing two mobile phones, was completely stolen.
She reportedly told one US gossip columnist on the night: “Someone stole my handbag. It had two phones in it.”
The official version, from 37-year-old Naomi’s publicity company (who, it must be noted, also publicised the concert) was that she simply had her Blackberry phone stolen during the gig, or that perhaps she just mislaid it.
Damn looks like the fan just Jim Browned her….
