President Obama To Virginia Governor: Omission Of Slaves’ History Unacceptable

Posted by Media Outrage on April 9, 2010

President Obama addressed the fact that Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell’s omission of slaves’ history during Confederate History Month.

President Barack Obama says Virginia’s governor made “an unacceptable omission” when he proclaimed it Confederate History Month without mentioning slavery.

“I don’t think you can understand the Confederacy and the Civil War unless you understand slavery,” said Obama, the nation’s first black president. First lady Michelle Obama is descended from a South Carolina slave.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell came under harsh criticism for issuing April’s history month proclamation without any reference to slavery. The Republican governor at first defended his decree, saying it was intended to honor the Confederate sacrifice on Virginia soil and promote tourism. On Wednesday he apologized and added a paragraph condemning slavery, saying that leaving it out had been a “major omission.”

Interviewed by ABC News on Thursday in Prague, Obama said the controversy was “a reminder that when we talk about issues like slavery that are so fraught with pain and emotion, that, you know, we’d better do so thinking through how this is going to affect a lot of people.”

Mediaoutrage–  One word to describe Governor Bob McDonnell – RACIST as HELL!  Oops that was 3.  OH well sue us.

here’s my thing……….Obama doesn’t have a ounce of slavery in his blood……why speak? AHHHH…to rally the blacks and cause discord……pretty nice Democrat…..pretty nice indeed!

Ronin, I’m white, does that mean I’m not allowed to speak about this either?
McDonnell has shown, in his brief tenure, just how racist and bigoted he is. Why the hell did Virginians elect this guy?

@Poker Face I was just about to write the same exact thing. Although I’m black President Obama not having any slavery blood in him has nothing to do with him publicly condemning wrong. The Gov. was dead wrong for that and in my opinion such omissions are not a MISTAKE.

All I have to say is this has been a topic widely and vastly discussed within my social group. Mostly because we are from VA. We ALL feel that they have narrowed it down to one month as VA is TRULY a racist state and the Confederacy was prevalent there 12 months out of the year. They say one month but the residents endure this hatred ALL YEAR LONG. I am happy our President brought the topic to the forefront. Maybe now we can see some growth, at least in VA. Let’s all continue to pray, to what ever God u paray to as we as a nation need help.

Confederate History Month – we weren’t only slaves now. There were black soliders who fought in the confederacy…so don’t say our history is just about slavery when talking about southern history.

BUT THE SLAVES WHO FOUGHT IN THE CONFEDERATE WAR WAS ONLY GIVEN A SO CALLED FREEDOM ONLY WHILE THEY WHERE FIGHTING IN THE WAR.THE WAR RAN FROM 1860-1865 .THE BLACKS ON THE WEST AND EAST COAST RECIEVED THERE FREEDOM IN 1863,ALL THE SOUTHERN STATES WHERE KEPT IN SLAVERY UNTIL 1865.THAT’S WHY WE DOWN SOUTH CELEBRATE JUNETENTH.BECAUSE ON JUNE 19,1865 MISSOURI ALL STATES BELOW IT FINALLY RELEASED ALL IT’S SLAVES.NOW THE SLAVES THAT FOUGHT IN THE REVALUTIONARY WAR GOT REAL FREEDOM AND THEY STAYED ON THE EAST COAST WHEN IT WAS OVER.THAT’S WHY THE BLACKS EDUCATED ON THE EAST COAST BLOW THE BLACKS EDUCATED DOWN SOUTH OUT OF THE WATER.THAT’S A FACT
